More Information
Mike advises clients on copyright and unfair competition matters and domain name disputes as well as on patents in the fields of hydrocarbon processing, mechanical, chemical and business methods. His clients vary from individuals to startups to well-established entities, and are both local and international.
He also advises clients on how to avoid infringing others' patents and trademarks, and actively encourages resolution of disputes in lieu of litigation, but oversees litigation when necessary. Mike negotiates licensing and distribution agreements on behalf of clients, most recently in the field of alcoholic beverages and electrical transformers.
Mike was counsel with Burns, Doane, Swecker & Mathis, one of the oldest and largest law firms in the United States focusing exclusively on intellectual property, until its lawyers and other professionals joined the Buchanan Ingersoll firm in 2005. Prior to that, he served as counsel for Chevron for two decades, and started his career as a patent agent for Allied-Signal.
In addition to admissions in to practice in California and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Mike is admitted to practice before a number of federal district and appellate courts. In the spring and fall of 2004, he was a guest presenter on the topic of IP law to the Vietnam Ministries of Trade and Agriculture, and has lectured on the Madrid Protocol to the Practicing Law Institute (PLI).
